Oriental rugs, Kilims and hemp rugs
Oriental rugs bring warmth and splendour to any home. Whether it be a modern, minimalist studio flat or a traditional rural farmhouse, the appeal of the oriental carpet is timeless.
All our rugs from India, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey are hand-knotted and made using traditional methods. We are always happy to source rugs of specific size, type and colour on our buying trips, for customers who are looking for a product that we do not have in stock. We can also source oversize carpets (e.g. 20m2) for you to try out in your home with no obligations.
Kilim is the Turkish word for a flatweave rug or a rug with no pile. These marvellously decorated tribal weavings from the Kurdish peoples of north-west Iran to the exotically colourful pieces from Afghanistan, not only retain their distinctive, strong character, but have become spectacular and useful features of modern western interior design.
For furniture that welcomes you home, John Sankey takes the beauty and endurance of traditional craftsmanship and updates it for contemporary living. Made with care and the closest attention to every detail, we strive for creative innovation and excellent quality.
From the grand proportions of The Mitford Lounger to the vintage country appeal of Tolstoy, these sofas form part of a range of upholstered pieces, all unique in character. They are available in a wide range of fabrics sourced from all over the world.
John Sankey are proud to present a range of imaginative chairs all custom made and hand crafted to the highest standards of traditional furniture making. These beautiful chairs are available in a wide choice of fabrics and leathers.
Throws and quilts
The majority of our throws are made by a Co-operative in Northern India run by a friend of our family. The intricate and varied designs are traditional handicrafts from Gujarat and Rajasthan.
Throws are particularly versatile have a multitude of uses. They can liven up any room as a bedspread or wall hanging and make perfect gifts. We should point out however, that they are too delicate to use as sofa coverings.
Lighting and Indian artefacts
Chambers International supply our range of distinctive lighting. Chambers are designers, manufacturers and suppliers of finely crafted lamps sourced from India.
You will find a great diversity of traditional and contemporary styles, including intricately hand painted lamps, old wooden Himalayan Pot Lamps and brass lamps in different finishes. Handpainted lamps are individually crafted and painted by artists and are lacquered. Lampshades are included.
With over 14 years of buying experience, an intimate knowledge of northern India and with a passion for the old, eastofhere brings you items that are both unique and most importantly, beautiful.
From regular wooden lines, like teak wood and stone bowls and wooden boxes of all sizes to painted shrines, the choice is both huge and uniquely whimsical. In this age of modern consumerism, it almost seems impossible to find items that are totally one-off which don't cost the earth.
Our showrooms are situated in Historic Chapel Street, Penzance, Cornwall.
Over one hundred years ago, at a small 'live-over' shop in St Ives, Joseph White cut out window blinds on his kitchen table. This simple act helped to form the foundations of the family owned, Whites the Furnishers, a company that has played an integral role in the business communities of St Ives and Penzance ever since.
Joseph's grandson Roger took over from his father Cecil in 1968 and rebranded the business as Roger White Interiors; a company specialising in bespoke interior design and more recently, rugs and artefacts from the east.
In October 2003, Polly White, great granddaughter of Joseph, and her husband Stephen began a new stage of the family's trading legacy - eastofhere
