With most oriental rugs taking their names from places or tribes, Khal Mohammadi rugs are notable for their being named after a person. Khan Mohammad was an influential rug weaver who developed what has become something of a classic design among Afghan carpets. They are characterised generally by their deep (usually red) colours and well balanced, repeating designs, which are made up usually of a mixture of geometric and stylised floral patterns. These rugs have a medium length pile, giving them a velvet like texture, and are hand-knotted in the North of Afghanistan using high quality hand-spun wool.
